Referendum Subverts Vote

very different people voting very different views

Arizona Department of Transportation's (ADOTs) April 28th letter to the Sedona City Council expressed concern about keeping the SR89A transfer negotiations open until after the referendum vote, presumably November 8, 2011. "How can we have any assurance that another referendum or action of the Council might not stay the City...resulting in future litigation...?" February 22, 2011, the City Council voted four-to-three to accept the road transfer agreement negotiated between ADOT and the Sedona City … [Read more...]

Ruth "Pud" Colquitt, former mayor of Sedona, tells the ADOT Board of Directors on May 20, 2011, that the purpose of the referendum was not to get a true vote, yay or nay, but to overturn Council's February 22, 2011 decision--the very thing that made ADOT take the deal off the table. Many people rallied to Sheri Graham's call for a vote. They may or may not have agreed to "legislation by referendum" (see also on this site Arizona's referendum rule), but who's going to say a vote is a bad thing? We're all … [Read more...]
